By virtue of Presidential Proclamation (well, aren’t we official?), June 2016 is LGBT Pride Month. During this month-long celebration, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, joined by other humans who believe in equality, will march, parade, and party to celebrate something that the rest of the world often takes for granted: pride in being who they are. Although huge progress has been made toward equality under US law in recent years, discrimination and hate are still very real issues that challenge the LGBT community across the country, as highlighted by recent controversies and the nationwide dialogue they have sparked.
Even if you are not a member of the LGBT community, being proud of your identity in the face of opposition is something that we all should value, regardless of our sexual orientation or gender identity.
