As January comes to a close, this is the perfect time to sit back and check where you’re at with those New Year's Resolutions. How's it going? If you're still keeping at it, good job! You're on your way.
For the rest of us, don't worry. Maybe those resolutions were actually meant to be Chinese New Year's Resolutions, instead! Is that a thing, you ask? Well, why not, we say. But if Chinese New Year's Resolutions aren't your cup of tea, there's plenty of more traditional ways to engage with this colorful cultural holiday.
Chinese New Year falls on Monday, February 8 in 2016. But in China, the official public holiday will last a whole week - from Chinese New Year's Eve on February 7, through February 13. Don't you wish we got a week off for New Year's here in the US? If you think that's a long time to celebrate, consider that, traditionally, celebrations lasted a whole 23 days (or even longer)!
Celebrations will take many forms, both in China and in Chinese cultural communities across the world, including many places in the US. Colorful fireworks, beautiful lanterns, dancing dragons, and a variety of traditional foods fill the days of Chinese New Year. Of course, Chinese New Year is perhaps most well-known for being associated with an animal from the Chinese Zodiac. This year, 2016, is the Year of the Monkey!
